This year I have decided to concentrate
the majority of my fishing time at
SPINNEY Mountain Lake.
SPINNEY Mountain Lake is a premier Gold Medal water in Colorado's South Park. Located just two
scenic hours from Denver. SPINNEY Mountain State Park, is easy to get to and has some of the best
trout fishing in the state of Colorado. Swimming, scuba diving, and water-skiing are prohibited. This
means its just a fishing lake. At 2,500 Ft. surface acres, it has plenty of mossy habitat that produces
plenty of crustaceans and other forage, to produce big, fat, healthy trout. These trout can grow big
and they do so very quickly. SPINNEY Mountain Reservoir is "Gold Medal Fishing", which means it
is an "artificial fly and lure" lake. The possession limit is one Trout 20" or longer. Smaller fish must
be returned to the water immediately.
The Colorado Division of Wildlife has instituted several innovative management techniques for
SPINNEY Reservoir. These include removing all size and bag limits on pike; stocking trout only in
the late fall or early winter when pike metabolisms have slowed down; stocking trout that are already
at least 12" long; and encouraging fishermen to harvest all pike caught, regardless of size.
This has significantly reduced the pike in numbers
and gives the trout a better chance to reach trophy size.
SPINNEY Mountain Reservoir still has trophy sized
Northern Pike and catching one of those
30 or 40 inch monsters is a real thrill.
Trout can be caught on a variety of artificial baits. Hardware can be trolled with great success for the
novice fisherman and catch rates can be quite high. If you are a more experienced fisherman you
can do well casting and retrieving a variety of baits. SPINNEY Mountain Reservoir is very popular
with fly fisherman. Belly boaters and waders can be seen all around the lake, but the best way to fish
is from the boat. I have a good knowledge of the lake as I have fished it for many years. Fly fishing at
SPINNEY Mountain Reservoir in Colorado can be a "not soon forgotten experience".
From my boat a fisherman has quick access to all of the lake which is a huge advantage over wading
or paddling your feet in a belly boat. There is no stumbling over rocks trying to hit that rising trout
with the perfect cast. A quiet approach to an area with the electric trolling motor or simply drifting
works great. Fly fishing in Colorado's SPINNEY Mountain Reservoir can be great fishing with a
thousand dollar rig or as simple as drifting a fly behind a plastic bubble.
If you are experienced, or just a beginner, I can help you catch fish. There is just nothing like a
rainbow jumping 3 feet in the air after it's hooked, and they just never seem to give up.
"Lets go fishing"!!
Rob
